HMRC reporting & your details

UK law requires online marketplaces to report sellers who make 30+ sales or over about £1,700 in a calendar year to HMRC. This isn't a new tax – most people selling occasionally won't owe anything.

Why we ask

Under the Platform Operators (Due Diligence and Reporting Requirements) Regulations 2023, online marketplaces like Forge and Guild must collect information about their sellers and report qualifying sales to HMRC once a seller crosses the reporting threshold in a calendar year.

When we need your details

  • At 25 sales or £1,500 in a calendar year we'll show you a heads-up: we'll soon need a few details.
  • At 30 sales or over about £1,700 we're required to collect them — the form appears in your seller dashboard (HMRC Reporting tab).
  • If we've asked and the details aren't added within 60 days, payouts are paused until they're saved. They resume automatically as soon as you add them.
  • Totals reset each 1 January.

What we collect

Individuals: legal name, date of birth, home address and National Insurance number (or a confirmation that you don't have one). Businesses: trading name, registered business address and company registration number if you have one.

Who can see it

Your details are stored privately — only you and Forge and Guild's compliance team can see them. They're shared with HMRC only as the law requires, and only if you're reportable.

Do I owe tax?

Being reported is not a tax charge. Whether you owe tax depends on your own circumstances — see GOV.UK's guidance on tax when selling online.
